thinking outside the [jewelry] box.

i don't really own any expensive jewelry [other than my wedding rings]. truth be told, i'd rather spend $20 on funky/trendy stuff that will only last me a year until i break it [and/or it goes out of style]. i know that this is largely a function of the fact that i'm cheap and young.

so... when i got this great idea from my friend, martha, i just *had* to replicate it!

she took corkboard and framed it and then hung all her jewelry out where it could be seen. isn't that brilliant??? i always end up wearing the same 2 necklaces because
a) they're generic and go with everything, and
b) they're what i see on top of my shelf in my closet.

martha made hers... and hers will probably last forever. i randomly saw a $5 corkboard at target during the back-to-school sales, and figured it would work for now. i went into our kit for "everything wall hangings" and popped a few hooks in there, and voila!!

[forgive the high-glare photo... this is from my "don't forget to show off this project" archives, and the photo was before the 31 days to a better photo that changed my life forever!]

you can probably guess that this caught my eye because it's a dark shade of aqua, and *just happens* to go lovely with the [slowly but surely] decor / color pallet in our room. [see what else i've done to make a decor-less room look a *tiny* bit more homey.]

i love that i can see all the different pieces and their various colors, so that i can coordinate as i dress, and some of my oft-forgotten jewelry can get put into regular circulation again :)

  1. A, that looks great! I love the color you used. I love the look of jewelry out on display as a sort of art installation.

I probably got the idea out of a Real Simple magazine. The one I made starts with a cheap frame, take out all the middle parts, all that is left is the frame. Buy a perforated aluminum sheet:
    http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=perforated+aluminum+sheet&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053
They come in different colors; I used gold. Cut the sheet out with sheers to fit the frame; use the glass from the frame as a stencil. Hot glue the metal mesh to the inside of the frame. Use "S" hooks to hang everything.
    It comes out beautiful!
    Thanks for featuring me A!
