hmmm ... i know that john and sherry said something about poly. didn't they say that the oil-based is still ok?? or was it the water-based??
but when i compared labels, it didn't look like there was much of a difference in the label. both said that they contained harmful chemicals. both had some pretty intense warnings. so i opted for the old-fashioned, normal poly, instead of the water-based.
and then i got *really* smart when i got home, and did a search of their website, to find out what they recommend. [and i say *really* smart, because i did this AFTER i bought the poly, as opposed to BEFORE. brilliant, i tell you. that's why i have the letters after my name and all.]
anyway, that's when i realized that i bought the wrong stuff. john and sherry recommend safecoat.

the stuff john and sherry use is 100% non-toxic. and it's also very low-VOC, and very low odor. it's definitely the healthy option.
and the kicker is this ... the stuff i already bought, the minwax poly is $10.47 for a quart. the safecoat is $29.90 for a quart!! and on top of that, they don't have it in my local big box stores, so i think i'd have to order it online and pay shipping if i really wanted it. so we're talking about at least 300% more ... maybe even 350% or 400%.
so i'm turning the question back on you ... what would you do?? would you go with the stuff you already paid for, or would you go for the expensive stuff, because it's safer??
do any of you have any experience with safecoat? were you able to find it locally??
PS if you're one of my LURKER readers who i know in real life and NEVER comment, i want YOUR OPINION most of all, because i know you guys are super sensitive to these things and do crazy stuff like clean with vinegar and make your own laundry soap ... so if commenting's not your bag, please fb me or text, or send up a smoke signal. :) and thanks in advance for the help :)

Ok, I am not a huge home painter or whatev's but I have been around a chemical or two in my day...and radiation, and infectious agents...you know the ushe. I say use the cheap stuff you already got. My policy is that there have to be a balance to everything. Here you have to balance out the extra cost & extra effort with the fact that you can just open your windows, or take your piece outside if it is small enough. Also, try not to eat the poly or bathe in it and you should be fine. I mean, I clean with baking soda and vinegar but am I going to give up nail polish--No, I am not.
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
Wow that's really expensive (and I'm so cheap) I say stick with the old stuff and go outside.
ReplyDeleteThen again, I just bought the "good" spray paint last night for when I paint my daughter's headboard I got on craigslist!
Use the stuff you bought. If you were doing a major renovation, I could see you wanting to use healthier things because you don't want to overload with the chemicals. But you already bought it and it's only the one project, right?
ReplyDeleteUgh, blogger doesn't like me right now. That anonymous comment is mine!
